  13. Many applications, like CuteFTP, VNC, IncrediMail, Outlook Express, and
  14. others, allows you to type a password for using it in the application.
  15. The typed password is not displayed on the screen, and instead of the
  16. real password, you see a sequence of asterisk ('****') characters. This
  17. utility can reveal the passwords stored behind the asterisks in standard
  18. password text-boxes.
  19. Asterisk Logger is a successor of AsterWin utility. It reveals the
  20. asterisk passwords in the same way as AsterWin utility, but it has some
  21. advantages over the previous utility:
  22. * You don't have to press a button in order to reveal the asterisk
  23.   passwords. Whenever a new window containing a password box is opened,
  24.   Asterisk Logger automatically reveals the password inside the
  25.   password-box, and add a record to passwords list in the main window of
  26.   Asterisk Logger.
  27. * Asterisk Logger displays additional information about the revealed
  28.   password: The date/time that the password was revealed, the name of the
  29.   application that contains the revealed password box, and the executable
  30.   file of the application.
  31. * Asterisk Logger allows you the save the passwords to HTML file and to
  32.   3 types of text files.

  53. This utility works properly under Windows 9x, Windows ME, Windows 2000,
  54. and Windows XP. If you work on Windows NT, you should download the
  55. 'psapi.dll' and place it in your system32 directory. If you don't
  56. download this file under Windows NT, the Asterisk Logger utility will
  57. properly reveal the asterisk passwords, but it won't display the
  58. information about the application that contains the passwords.

  64. This utility works fine with most password text-boxes, but there are some
  65. applications that don't store the password behind the asterisks, in order
  66. to increase their security. In such cases, Asterisk Logger will not be
  67. able to reveal the password.
  68. The following applications and OS components don't store the password
  69. behind the asterisks:
  70. * Netscape 6.x (Passwords in the Web page)
  71. * Dialup and network passwords in Windows 2000
  72. * Windows NT/2000/XP user management tools.
  73. Asterisk Logger also cannot reveal the passwords in Internet Explorer Web
  74. pages, Because they are stored in different way than in other
  75. applications. if you want to reveal the passwords behind the asterisks in
  76. Internet Explorer, you can download the AsterWin IE utility.

  84. You are allowed to freely distribute this utility via floppy disk,
  85. CD-ROM, Internet, or in any other way, as long as you don't charge
  86. anything for this. If you distribute this utility, you must include all

  102. Using Asterisk Logger
  103. =====================

  105. except for Windows NT, this utility doesn't require any installation
  106. process or additional DLLs. Just copy to executable to any folder you
  107. want, and run it.
  108. Under Windows NT, you can still use this utility without any additional
  109. DLLs, but the information about the application that contains the
  110. asterisk password won't be displayed. In order to display the application
  111. information under Windows NT, you have to download psapi.dll and put it
  112. in your system32 directory. If this file is already exist on your system,
  113. you don't need to overwrite it.

  115. In order to reveal the passwords inside asterisk text-boxes, follow the
  116. instructions below:
  117. 1. Run the Asterisk Logger utility. The main window will appear, with
  118.    no items in it.
  119. 2. Open the windows that contains the asterisk text-box you want to
  120.    reveal. The password will be instantly revealed inside the password
  121.    box, and in addition, a record containing the password and other
  122.    information will be added to the main window of Asterisk Logger
  123.    utility.
  124. 3. After you reveal all the passwords you need, you can select the
  125.    desired passwords in the main window of Asterisk Logger, and save them
  126.    into text or HTML file.

  128. The Asterisk Logger utility also provides 2 additional options for using
  129. in special cases:
  130. * Log Changes In Password Box: If this option is checked, Asterisk
  131.   Logger automatically traces all changes in the revealed password boxes,
  132.   and whenever it find a change in the password, it instantly add a new
  133.   record to the passwords list, which contains the new modified password.
  134.   This option can be useful for some applications, like CuteFTP. When you
  135.   open to site manager of CuteFTP, the password of the current selected
  136.   FTP item is revealed. In order to easily reveal the passwords of other
  137.   items, check this option, and then move through all items that you want
  138.   to get their password. Each time you move into a new item, the password
  139.   will be added to the list in the main window of Asterisk Logger.
  140. * Log Duplicate Passwords: This option is available only if the
  141.   previous option is checked. If this options is checked, a modified
  142.   password will be added even if it's identical to one of the previous
  143.   passwords of the same password-box.

  147. Translating Asterisk Logger to the languages
  148. ============================================

  150. In order to translate Asterisk Logger to other language, follow the
  151. instructions below:
  152. 1. Run Asterisk Logger with /savelangfile parameter:
  153.    astlog.exe /savelangfile
  154.    A file named astlog_lng.ini will be created in the folder of Asterisk
  155.    Logger utility.
  156. 2. Open the created language file in Notepad or in any other text
  157.    editor.
  158. 3. Translate all string entries to the desired language. Optionally,
  159.    you can also add your name and/or a link to your Web site.
  160.    (TranslatorName and TranslatorURL values) If you add this information,
  161.    it'll be used in the 'About' window.
  162. 4. After you finish the translation, Run Asterisk Logger, and all
  163.    translated strings will be loaded from the language file.
  164.    If you want to run Asterisk Logger without the translation, simply
  165.    rename the language file, or move it to another folder.
